Justice League - The Heroes unite for one last DVD set
Posted by Gord Lacey

Characters from the original series of Justice League Unlimited are joined by a number of new superheroes making this final seasons showdown between Justice League Unlimited vs Legion of Doom the most suspenseful yet. After years of foiled plots and repeated beatings, the galaxy's worst villains finally have a plan: strength in numbers! Led by Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom prepares to dominate the universe. First order of business: destroy the Justice League. Featuring the original seven Leaguers - Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, J'onn J'onzz, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl - plus many other favorites, each episode showcases these heroes in battles like you've never seen. And just when you think they've faced the most unimaginable evils, a dark figure from the past resurfaces to exact revenge on them all.

Warner Bros is wrapping up Justice League: Unlimited in a big way. The final set - 13 episodes (286 mins) on 2 discs - will be released on March 20, 2007, and a month later they'll roll out a promotion at Carl's Jr and Hardee's restaurants that features themed kids meals, premiums, and $5 off the DVD set (for those that can wait that long). The episodes will be presented in Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1), with an English audio track. The set will retail for $26.99 - we'll post artwork when it's available."

I'm Writing Fantastic Four

Joe Quesada spilled the beans today in his "Joe Fridays" Blog:

NRAMA: With JMS’s recently-announced upcoming departure from Fantastic Four, can you offer up any information at to the future of that title? Who’s the next writer? Will Mike McKone remain as artist?

JQ: The new writer for FF will be Dwayne McDuffie! How’s that for breaking news. We’ll have more info on FF in the weeks to come.

NRAMA: So how much will McDuffie have to inherit in terms of the status quo being developed through the events of Civil War?

JQ: That absolutely comes with the territory. Dwayne completely understands that taking over FF at this juncture means stepping into the middle of this little story we have called Civil War.

NRAMA: So when you discussed the job with McDuffie, did you have to them him, “Well, you can write FF, but Reed and Su are separated and on opposite sides of Civil War. Johnny is with Sue, and Ben is completely out of the picture”?

Or will all that be resolved nice and tidy-like before a new writer takes over?

JQ: No there will be threads that will definitely have to be picked up. While this is usually the case to some minor extent whenever you have a creative shift on a longstanding title, because of Civil War, we need to be extremely thorough about the plotlines that are left unresolved.

Justice League Heroes: Costumes Unlocked

John Stewart with his post-Starcrossed break up hair-do.

Wonder Woman at the toga party.

Courtesy IGN:

In Justice League Heroes, players can purchase new costumes for the original seven Justice League members. There are two alternate costumes per character (with Superman getting three). These aren't your standard quick skins found in most games. Snowblind remodeled each character with their new costume and added some new animations as well. There are also some bonuses applied to specific costumes, including extra health, energy and even experience bonuses.

And Then There Was One……More.

Warner Brothers has announced that Hawkgirl will lend her powers to the Justice League crew, as an unlockable character, in the upcoming game Justice League Heroes. She joins Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Zatanna, Martian Hunter, and previously announced unlockables Aquaman, and Green Arrow. If you’ve read the comics, you already know that Hawgirl has some crazy ass-kicking skills, plus flying abilities- which should translate well into the game. When we know more, so will you. Stay tuned.

Aquaman in Justice League Heroes

Courtesy Crave Gaming...

The highly anticipated game Justice League Heroes has added a new hidden character, Aquaman. The game features Justice League regulars Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna. The Justice League Heroes must fight Brainiac and his group of super villians, including Killer Frost and The Key.

Posted: Friday, September 1st 2006 03:09 PM PST
By Ahmad T. Childress, Editor

Justice League Heroes is the first major pairing of all of the major Justice League characters in a single video game. Most games in the past have dealt specifically with Superman or Batman and were usually tied to feature films or the various animated shows. The game also features some recognizable names in the voice casting. Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Batman; Michael Jai White (Spawn) as Green Lantern; Crispin Freeman (Kingdom Hearts II) as Superman; Courtenay Taylor (God of War) as Wonder Woman; Chris Edgerly (Drawn Together) as The Flash; Kari Wahlgren (Steamboy) as Zatanna; and Daniel Riordan (Transformers) as Martian Manhunter. Portraying select villains will be Peter Jessop (Spawn) as Brainiac and Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) as The Key. Additionally, Ralph Garman (Family Guy) will voice Green Arrow.

Aquaman has some interesting powers in the game, such as a water whirlpool that traps foes called a “whirlpool”. The hero of Atlantis also has a sword and water shield. Aquaman is not the only character that can be unlocked. Green Arrow can also be unlocked in the game.

The game boasts an Original story by award-winning comic and animation writer Dwayne McDuffie (Static Shock, Justice League & Teen Titans).

JLH will arrive in Fall 2006 for the PS2, Xbox, PSP, GBA and Nintendo DS.

New Interview With Me

I pre-ordered this and Amazon just sent me a copy, even though their site still says, "Not Yet Released."

Masters of the Comic Book Universe

This informal history of the comic book chronicles, largely in their own words, the lives and careers of the artists and writers who created the most significant and memorable comic books and graphic novels. Stretching from Will Eisner, who started his work in the industry in 1936, to Marjane Satrapi, whose latest graphic novel was published last year, 11 comic book masters are discussed, including Art Spiegelman, Neil Gaiman, Stan Lee, Dwayne McDuffie, Kyle Baker, and Ho Che Anderson. Amazing stories of how these artists and writers fell in love with the genre and built up their careers are coupled with never-before-disclosed anecdotes and previously unpublished self-portraits that will surprise even the most knowledgeable fans.

Too much power, some think. From their Watchtower in space, the Justice League - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and J'onn J'onzz - floats above Earth, with countless new members including Green Arrow, Supergirl and Captain Atom. Their combined powers are awesome. And although these superheroes fight crime, eradicate evil and save the world over and over again, a conspiracy against them is growing. Led by the government, funded by Lex Luthor and fueled by a hidden enemy, Cadmus is born. The mission: to take down the Justice League. It's 26 episodes of action, intrigue and excitement in a 4-disc collection that any superhero fan should own! Plus, don't miss the shocking Epilogue that reveals the legacy of Batman!

So it looks like seasons one and two in a single release. And look, John Stewart finally made the cover of a season set!

Fantastic Four News

My first Marvel Comic in 13 years is being collected in trade paperback this September.

• When a doomsday weapon manufactured by Hydra turns up in the Nevada desert, there’s only one man the authorities can ask to go in and defuse it: Bruce Banner! What does all of this have to do with the FF, you ask? Well, who do you think has to deal with the fallout when it all goes terribly wrong?
• It’s hard to believe Reed and Sue tied the knot 40 years ago… and it certainly doesn’t seem that much time has passed to Reed and Sue themselves when a special evening out gives them a chance to look over their entire life together— past, present and future!
• The Invisible Woman is dead! As Reed cradles his murdered wife, lost in grief, and Ben rampages after Sue’s killer, Johnny defiantly decides to do whatever it takes— no matter the cost or consequence— to see his sister alive again. What he does will change the way the Fantastic Four look at him forever.
• It’s a day of celebration and reflection in Latveria, but deep within the confines of the Latverain Embassy to America, Victor Von Doom and Reed Richards engage in a subtle battle of wits, with all of Manhattan as the playing field. What are the stakes? And can Mister Fantastic triumph when all the moves have been made in advance?

Quadruple Bypass? Not So Bad.

I had significant blockage in four arteries that supplied blood to the front of my heart. The side effects of this condition hid the problems from several sets of doctors until a recent attempt at an angioplasty revealed the real trouble. Dr. Alfredo Trento, high thoracic muckety muck of Cedar Sinai Medical Center, performed a quadruple bypass on me Thursday and I'm back home as of this afternoon. I'm in very little pain and am walking almost normally. I feel better right this moment than I've felt in many years. They caught the problem before I even had a heart attack.

I'm cutting back on my workload for about 8 weeks but then I'm good to go. So Mr. D says, "Kids, ease up on the prime rib and stay in school!"

Thursday, April 27, 2006

Another thing we've done is taken an approach to our story that's very much like a graphic novel. Through cutscenes and in-game banter we tell our story very quickly. We're not going to make the player scroll through a bunch of text boxes over and over. Our story is always going to be moving forward; it's always going to be powered by voice-over. Our story is about pushing the action forward.

Game Producer Jason Ades has a lot more to say...

Pynchon, Ellison, Me and Greg?!

Found this ego-surfing on

“Recombinant Media: The Mutation of Subjectivity in a Post-Print Culture” argues that subjectivity in American literary postmodernism is a transformation of the subject produced by print technology. This transformation comes about as a result of cultural shifts in media priority and the changes media themselves undergo as they incorporate techniques of other media. This study examines how the representation and production of subjectivity in several print objects is affected by the incorporation of techniques more characteristic of non-print media such as film, electronics, and music. The introduction traces the rise of non-print media such as film, electricity, and radio and argues that these media both augment and deform is such a way that print media then produces “recombinant media” which dramatically alter the subject normally produced by print. The first chapter considers how Gravity's Rainbow hybridizes its own media body to create from its reader a retribalized, cybernetic subject. The second chapter traces the origins of this mutated, postmodern subject back to Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, arguing that the pressures of electricity and speech mutate Invisible Man into the prototype of the hacker. The third chapter considers Dwayne McDuffie's and Gregory Wright's comic series Deathlok as a print object that remediates electronics and cinema in order to interpret cyborg consciousness in terms of race, especially insofar as both can be described by W. E. B. DuBois's concept of double-consciousness. The fourth chapter revisits Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, arguing that the novel's critique of capitalism is conducted by the remediation of film, electricity, comics, textiles, and music. The conclusion suggests that Ellison's Invisible Man, Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, and McDuffie's and Wright's Deathlok forecast the end of print by mutating the subject of print culture into a species of networked cybernetic subject.

"Enter a galaxy of terror as the members of Team Alpha - a crew of super powered teens from across the globe - defend Planet Earth against a colony of merciless aliens.

"This league of unlikely heroes must stop the aliens before the planet is completely destroyed. However, the members of this team refuse to cooperate and work together.

"Join Team Alpha as they struggle to save the world in this super-charged, sci-fi adventure."

Marvel kicked off its programming at WizardWorld: Los Angeles this afternoon with its “Mondo Marvel” panel, covering several upcoming projects as well as a couple of previously unannounced titles.

One of the new projects announced at the panel was Beyond!, a six issue miniseries written by Dwayne McDuffie, with art by Scot Kolins. The miniseries will take a diverse group of Marvel’s B-list characters (and lower), and place them in a cosmic situation, off world.

LOS ANGELES -- Dwayne McDuffie, most recently a producer on Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited, will be teaming with Scott Kolins on Beyond, a six-issue cosmic mini-series from Marvel Comics.

"It involves several Marvel character you wouldn't expect to see together, including Gravity, and puts them off world in a cosmic situation," Marvel editor-in-chief said Friday during the Mondo Marvel panel at Wizard World Los Angeles, where the book was announced.

"Enemies become allies and they must work together to get back home," editor Tom Brevoort said.

Me again. For the record, I love the art, adore the project and hate the exclamation point in the title.

JLU Season 2 on DVD June 20

Courtesy World's Finest:

Hot off the heels of the Teen Titans and The Batman Second Season announcement, WHV has revealed to The World's Finest the release date for two more upcoming sets: Superman the Animated Series: Volume 3 and Justice League: The Complete Second Season. These two releases will hit simultaneously on June 20th, 2006 and will finish up the respective series on DVD.

This will certainly be welcome news for fans who didn't want to wait too long to purchase the second season of Justice League, which will be released in it's original widescreen aspect ratio.

Stay tuned for further details on these sets in the coming months.

Dwayne At Wondercon

I'll be at Wondercon San Francisco Friday and Saturday, February 10 and 11.

On Saturday, February 11th, 1:30 to 3pm at the Moscone Center, room 2018, I'll be doing the Animation Writing panel advertised as featuring Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Mark Evanier, Adam Beechen and Stan Berkowitz. It looks like Mark Evanier won't be able to make it, and I'm a feeble, last minute replacement (by the way, if you haven't visited Mak's incredible blog, you're missing out big time).

In any case, Justice League Story Editor Stan Berkowitz promises "lots of news of upcoming projects as well as a lengthy Q and A session."

See some of you there?

I'm Quoted in ABC News Black History Month Article

I'm briefly quoted in an article over at ABC News about Black history month.

Black History Month: Does It Fuel Racism?

Black History Month has its roots in 1926, when historian and scholar Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week to bring attention to the contributions of black people to American history.

He chose the second week of February to recognize black history because it marked the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Negro History Week ultimately became Black History Month. Woodson had hoped, however, that one day the need to have a special recognition of black history would be eliminated and that black history would be fully recognized as fundamental to American history.

Just a heads-up.

Dwayne Under Reconstruction

Be patient with me, folks. I've begun the process of sprucing things up around here. I'm implementing a slightly modified, but much simplified look that you'll see everywhere except on the news page, mainly because I haven't figured out how to swap it out yet. Meantime, let me know about broken links, missing images and the like as you run across them. I'm still transferring a lot of pages over to the new format, so some pages are placeholders, some haven't been reformatted yet and some are completely missing (like the "Search" function). But I'm working on all of it...

Here's a link, in case you came here first...

New Static Shock Interview

"With Static Shock and Justice League Unlimited now behind him, The World’s Finest caught up with Static Shock creator Dwayne McDuffie to discuss, in retrospect, his thoughts on the show. In addition to general comments, changes to the original Static character, troubles with the network and more are discussed in this all-new interview..."

Okay, I'm not done with JLU as far as know but still, there's an interview with me at a pretty cool website featuring a whole subsection on Static Shock. Click here for the whole thing.

Fantastic Four Special in The Washington Post

Courtesy mcole:

Dwayne's FF issue got reviewed this week in the Washington Post's Sunday Source section, in the Media Mix graph for new releases:

What You'll Love: "McDuffie's plot deftly juggles the spotlight between the four, all the while showing that Mr. Fantastic's compassion is as big as his intellect."

JLU News

Courtesy Comics Continuum:

The Legion of Super-Heroes will be featured along with Supergirl in an upcoming episode of Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited. In the episode, Supergirl is kidnapped to the 31st century for what the history books say was her last adventure. The Fatal Five appears, as do more than 20 Legionaires. Among the Legion members in the episode are Brainiac 5 and Bouncing Boy.

The Legion's appearance has nothing to do with the Legion show in development at Warner Bros. Animation.

In other Justice League news,

* Toonami UK has provided a hint at upcoming events in a recent release promoting its January programming. It mentions "a two-part series finale" that "reveal the real reason behind all the super-villain's recent attacks and lead to the most unexpected team-up in Justice League history."

* Mark Hamill, who returns to the role of the Trickster 14 years after playing him in The Flash TV series in the "Flash and Substance" episode, will have a "meaty role" in that episode, The Continuum has learned.
