We're #3! We're #3!

Diamond's "Top 100 Comics" for September ranking has just arrived, and the news is excellent. JLA #13, the first issue of my regular run, clocked in as the third best selling comic of the month, better yet it was DC Comics #1 selling comic, bar none!

Thnks to the good folks at DC and ace artists Joe Benitez and Victor Llamas for all the hard work, and thanks to all of you for giving the new guy a try. See you all next month?

New JLA Interview

SBC's Keith Dallas interviews me on my new JLA run.

"I really just wanted to get some villains in there. The book had done a lot of work over the past year building the characters and their relationships. All of that stuff was in really good shape. What we hadn’t seen a lot of was the huge action you would expect in a team book like this. The tough thing about having such a big and powerful team is finding something that threatens them. I may have overcompensated a bit..."

I'm Interviewed at JusticeLeagueOnFilm.com

I'm interviewed at JusticeLeagueonFilm.com:

"If I were doing a number one, I would jettison everything. But this is a book that people have been reading and enjoying for a year. So you can’t just come in and say, 'Now the Justice League are these three guys you never heard of and Aquaman.' You have to pick up the continuity as it is, and that’s fine."

MCDUFFIE WELCOMES MILLAR & HITCH TO THE FAMILY

Comic Book Resources has the story:

[They] were kind enough to let me see the scripts, many of which were done before I even started, so I kind of knew where [Millar] was going. It's going to be cool. Oh, yeah, I will be reading it,” said McDuffie, who told CBR News that he knew his run on Marvel's first family would be limited from the outset.

Wizard Likes Avengers Classic #3

From Monday Morning Quarterback:

AVENGERS CLASSIC #3
Marvel
Stan Lee, Dwayne McDuffie (W)/Jack Kirby, Michael Avon Oeming (A)
COTTON: “The reprint story in this issue—the battle between the Avengers and Namor, who has teamed with the Hulk—is obviously a classic and always fun for a read, but the true gem in this book are the backup stories—this week from Dwayne McDuffie and Michael Avon Oeming. Even if Oeming’s gorgeous art wasn’t just the right mix of old and new school for you, then the story should still deliver for fans as it covers a one-on-one between a very unconfident and unsure Hank Pym and a very confident and sure Iron Man, who believes no matter how many gods or kings or Hulks they face, man will always win out. But on the last page there are those hints that maybe Tony Stark—even at the beginning of the Avengers—wasn’t as confident as he seemed and where he drew his strength from wasn’t a pleasant place.”

MAESTRO AT COMICON INTERNATIONAL

"I'm taking it easy this year, " I said.

As always, if you see me on the floor and say the secret word I'll give you a freebie (warning: due to the relative sizes of COMICON and my wallet, the freebies are fairly cheesy but they are Milestone-related). For those who don't know it already, the secret word can be located at the top of my forum page.

Anyway, here's my schedule, with locations where available:

THURSDAY, JULY 26
DC COMICS SIGNING
4:00-5:30 PM I'll be somewhere in the big DC booth. I'll sign anything you bring, by the way, even if it's comics from arvel-may or Ilestone-may. I'll also sign DVDs or videogames or whatever you've got that I've worked on.

DC GROUP THERAPY PANEL
6:00-700 Room 6A
I guess we're going to talk about DC superteams. I'm a late addition, so be gentle.

FRIDAY, JULY 27
ANTIDOTE TRUST SIGNING
11:00 AM-12:00 PM at booth #828
I'll be signing whatever you put in front of me at the very cool Antidote Trust booth, convention home of several independent publishers who have excellent stuff to buy.

DC COMICS SIGNING
2:30-4:00 PM DC Comics signing, I'll be somewhere in the big DC booth. I'll sign anything you bring, by the way, even if it's comics from arvel-may or Ilestone-may. I'll also sign DVDs or videogames or whatever you've got that I worked on.

SATURDAY, JULY 28
THE BLACK PANEL
10:30-11:30 Room 5AB
Here's how they describe it: "This year’s Black Panel features Prodigal Sunn (The Wu Tang Clan), Ehrich Van Lowe (TV producer The Cosby Show, The Tom Joyner Show), Sidney Clifton (executive VP, Film Roman), Denys Cowan (senior VP, BET Animation), Andy Horne (producer, 24), Marv Wolfman (creator of Blade), and newcomer Korby Marks. Hear about their exciting new comics and animation projects! Moderated by Michael Davis." Somebody noticed that there were only a few comic book guys on the panel, and invited me and some other surprise guests to join the fun. Wait until you see who they got!

DCU: NEW WORLDS ORDER
1:30-2:45 PM Room 6B
"The crisis is over, isn’t it? With 52 finished, the DCU is counting down and the Monitors are watching closely. Come play catch-up, have your questions answered, and learn what lies ahead for the DCU in this extensive slide show presentation moderated by Dan DiDio (senior VP/executive editor DCU) and Bob Wayne (VP, sales). Joining them will be coordinating editor Jann Jones, senior group editor Mike Carlin, group editor Eddie Berganza, plus Tony Bedard (Birds of Prey,), Adam Beechen (Robin), Paul Dini (Detective Comics), Justin Gray (Countdown), Geoff Johns (The All New Booster Gold), Dan Jurgens (Booster Gold), Sean McKeever (Teen Titans), Jesus Merino (Superman), Carlos Pacheco (Superman), Jimmy Palmiotti (Countdown), Grant Morrison (Batman), Ivan Reis (Green Lantern), and Gail Simone (The All-New Atom). "

I was just asked to join this august assemblage of DCU firepower. Again, be gentle.

DC COMICS SIGNING
3:00-4:00 PM DC Comics signing, I'll be somewhere in the big DC booth. I'll sign anything you bring, by the way, even if it's comics from arvel-may or Ilestone-may. I'll also sign DVDs or videogames or whatever you've got that I worked on.

Fantastic Four Review

Fantastic Four #547 (Marvel Comics)
by Dwayne McDuffie, Paul Pelletier & Rick Magyar
McDuffie is in the midst of one of the most fun Fantastic Four stints I’ve had the pleasure of reading, and he manages to pull off the impossible. He handles the Torch/Thing interplay incredibly well, but he also manages to make the Black Panther and Storm funny as well. The science-fiction elements he brings to the mix are as inventive as anything one would find in a Warren Ellis script, and McDuffie manages to offer a nice blend of wholesome, playful super-hero fun with some compelling moments of drama and tension as well. McDuffie brings a classic sensibility to the title team despite the unconventional nature of the lineup, and the sense of wonder is infectious.

Avengers Classic #1 Assembles And Sells Out!

Avengers Classic #1 Assembles And Sells Out!

Marvel is pleased to announce that AVENGERS CLASSIC #1, the debut issue of the series that collects the Avengers' earliest tales, has sold out at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level). Featuring all-new stories by Dwayne McDuffie and Stan Lee, not to mention a re-mastered AVENGERS #1, AVENGERS CLASSIC #1 doesn't just reprint stories—it brings them to you like never before! Going back to Marvel's film archive, Avengers Classic features rescans from original stats and film, cleaned up to restore it as closely as possible to the original art, and remasters the coloring restoring it to match the original using modern coloring techniques. The end result is an updated, sharper issue of Avengers than you've ever seen before that captures the spirit and power of Jack Kirby's groundbreaking art.

Just one issue in, the series has proven to be a hit with fans and critics alike! "It's only one of the most important comic books in history," said SilverBulletComicBooks.Com's Kevin Powers of the tale inside AVENGERS CLASSIC #1. "Kirby's art looks fantastic and still resonates 44 years later."

Said Editor Alejandro Arbona of the brand new stories, "Dwayne McDuffie and Michael Avon Oeming add layers of depth to the already brilliant characters created by Stan and Jack. Focusing on individual Avengers and their personal tribulations during some of the team's earliest thrilling adventures, 'AVENGERS CLASSIC' enriches their world and touches on the humanity of Earth's mightiest heroes." Fans will also thrill to added bonuses such as the original house ad from AVENGERS #2—never before reprinted!—and the original letter pages, which will begin appearing with issue #5!

Marvel has no plans to go back to press on AVENGERS CLASSIC #1 at this time. Don't miss AVENGERS CLASSIC #2, as the Hulk smashes his way into a re-mastered AVENGERS #2 and into an all new story by Dwayne McDuffie & Michael Oeming! Bruce Banner is in jail and charged with murder. Could he be guilty? And don't forget the stunning AVENGERS CLASSIC poster by Art Adams, featuring the cover to issue #1, is still available in stores!

I'm appearing at the Black Age of Comics Convention

I'll be making my first ever appearance at The 6th Annual East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBACC) on Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19, 2007, on Temple University's Main Campus in Philadelphia. In addition to being the home of the Glyph Awards, this convention has already become the creative and cultural center of the Black Comics movement.

Here's what the flier says.:

*Meet and network with comic book publishers, writers and artists.
*Find rare and unique comic books, Kid's Corner, professional workshops, lectures, marketplace and more.
*To get on the mailing list and more information email: Blackageofcomics@ecbacc.com

Other guests include Kyle Baker, Taimak (Berry Gordy's “The Last Dragon”), Bern Nadette Stanis (Thelma on “Good Times”), L.A. Banks (Vampire Huntress series), Jerry Craft (Mama's Boyz), Alex Simmons (Black Jack), William Foster (Finally in Full Color) Mshindo Kuumba I. (Illustrator).

As usual, I'll sign anything of mine you bring me. I'll probably also bring some overstock comics to sell. Any interest in autographed Milestone, Static Shock or Justice League scripts for, say, five bucks a pop?

TEEN TITANS Script, Sketches for Auction

Me and some of the guys from Teen Titans have donated a script for auction to raise funds for a group of comic book creators who did work for a low-life publisher, who has refused to pay them. I'll let the folks at the auction explain:

This item is donated by amazingly talented writer Dwayne McDuffie to help freelance comic creators struggling due to the unethical behavior of an immoral publisher. All proceed from this auction go towards helping those creators.

Check out www.unscrewedcomic.com for more details.

This is a very unique item. It's the original script from the Teen Titans episode "Fear Itself" featuring the first appearance of the fanboy villain Control Freak. This is script is signed by Dwayne McDuffie, Murakami, Wyatt, Youngberg, and Jones...who all worked on the episode. Wyatt, Youngberg, Jones, and Murakami also include sketches of Teen Titans characters, including Control Freak.

This is the first draft script, with scenes and dialog that didn't make it into the final show. If you're into Titans, or you just want justice for some badly-wronged comic book creators, go over to the auction and help these guys raise some money.

FF #544 Sells Out!

Marvel is pleased to announce that Fantastic Four #544, the first issue to feature the new team lineup, has sold out at Diamond. In the aftermath of Civil War, Marvel’s first family must re-evaluate their place in life, leaving the team without Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, filling the roles with Black Panther & Storm.

To fulfill the demand for the launch of this exciting new direction for Fantastic Four, Marvel is going back to press on Fantastic Four #544 with an all-new cover by Paul Pelletier!

In Fantastic Four, writer Dwayne McDuffie’s highly anticipated first story arc featuring the new FF, complete with the artistic stylings of Paul Pelletier, has brought a new set of challenges to the redefined Four, whose first mission is out of this world—literally!

Fans and critics alike have lauded praise upon the issue, with ComicBookResources.com’s Hannibal Tabu saying, “his is solid work in the tradition of the FF with big ideas wrestling with high adventure.” The feeling is echoed by Newsarama.com’s Josh Siegel who said, “This issue was fun, and it was over-the-top in that fantastic way that is sometimes missing from a story featuring that word in its title.”

Note, Fantastic Four #544 may still be available at the retailer level. Marvel advises that retailers check their orders for upcoming issues as the titles continues to garner new readers following the FF’s high profile role in the best-selling Civil War event.

I'm Interviewed in Publisher's Weekly

Detroit native Dwayne McDuffie’s 20-plus years in the writing business have taken him to every corner of the comics universe and beyond. Among other characters, the acclaimed writer has written Batman and Deathlok for DC Comics and Marvel. McDuffie (along with Michael Davis, Denys Cowan and Derek Dingle) was also cocreator of Milestone Media, the most successful black-owned comic company. Static Shock—a highly successful cartoon version of Milestone hero Static—led McDuffie to an equally stellar career in animation, including a stint as a producer on the Cartoon Network’s Justice League and Justice League Unlimited series. The release of the multiplatform Justice League Heroes game soon followed in late 2006, representing McDuffie’s first script work for the videogame industry. Now, McDuffie’s come back to monthly comics with gigs on DC’s Fantastic Four and the last issues of Firestorm for Marvel. PWCW talked to McDuffie about his television highlights, comic book triumphs and video game adventures.

More Wizard World LA Appearances

On Saturday, March 14, in addition to my 2-4 PM signing session at the Earth-2 Comics booth, I'll also be making two appearances for Marvel Comics. First up, a Civil War Panel:

Civil War Fallout--The Initiative Panel
1-2, Peatree Hall [moved from its original location and time--this is the updated and correct time/room!]

It's over. Civil War has ended, leaving in its wake destruction as never before seen in Marvel history. Teams and friendships have been torn apart, and most of the Marvel Universe is forced to start anew. The time for rebuilding is here as a new era is ushered in: The Initiative. Teams are falling apart as others are forming. What will happen to your favorite characters and teams? Who will live? Who will die? What new heroes will arise from the devastation? Your burning questions will be addressed and bombs dropped as Executive Editor Tom Brevoort joins special guests Ed Brubaker, Jeph Loeb and more to deliver dispatches from the front lines. You cannot miss this!

I just agreed to do this an hour ago, so I think I'm "and more."

Also, from 4-5, I'll be signing whatever you've got at the Marvel Booth

I'm Interviewed in the 1st Issue of UVC

New York Con visitors already have their copies but the rest of us should be on the look out for the premier issue of UVC, which includes an interview with yours truly, and features on BLOKHEDZ and STORMBRINGERS.

UVC is a new, free, comics industry magazine covering... I'll leave the description to Editor Rich Watson:

"The shorthand way we’ve been describing it is “Wizard meets Vibe.” That only scratches the surface, though, of what we hope to accomplish with this new magazine.

Like any comics magazine, you’ll get your feature articles, your news, your reviews, your fun stuff. While Ron and I will keep tabs on stuff from the Big Two, as you would expect, we will also do our part towards promoting quality independent work. In that sense, it won’t be too different from what I do solo with Glyphs."

I wrote for FRIENDS and HEROES

Okay, not quite as cool as that sounds. I didn't write for the popular sitcom "Friends" or the current hit drama "Heroes", but I did write some episodes for the very cool BBC animated Bible tales series "Friends and Heroes," and you can catch it every Saturday on TBN at 9:30 PST (check local listings). My first episode is a ways off but it's a pretty cool show, anyway, featuring 2D animation that switches to 3D for the Bible stories that are in each episode.

Geek cred you're asking for? How about the series is story edited by Justice League stalwart Stan Berkowitz and Produced by Star Wars' Gary Kurtz?

Fantastic Four #542 on Sale Wed.

My first issue as the writer of Fantastic Four arrives at your local comic store this Wednesday, January 17. I start knee-deep in Civil War, with Reed and Sue estranged, Johnny just-recovered from serious injuries and Ben still an expatriate in Paris.

For those of you unhappy with Reed's behavior during this storyline, you might want to hear his side of things as this issue reveals the REAL reason he supports the Super Hero Registration Act. It's all leading up to next issue's 45 anniversary special, celebrating the history of the World's Greatest comic Magazine, concluding Civil War, and finally determining the fate of the team.

Hope you'll give it a try.
