I'm Interviewed at Comixfan Forums

A Milestone Of An Interview With Dwayne McDuffie

Interview conducted by Z. Julian Cenac.

As well as being a founder of Milestone Media (which saw the introduction of numerous African-American characters such as Static), Dwayne McDuffie was also a producer/writer on Justice League Unlimited and has written various titles for Marvel and DC Comics. You may also know of him as a creator/writer of the Static Shock animated series. He is currently penning the Justice League of America comic. With Milestone characters returning, but in the DC universe, it was time for an interrogation.

Comixfan: Why are the DC and Milestone universes being merged?

Dwayne McDuffie: Over at Milestone, we've been looking to get our characters back in print again for quite some time. DC was looking to expand their universe with fresh characters and situations. Dan DiDio suggested that we bring the Milestone characters back within the DCU as a way to achieve both of our goals. It took a while to put together a business and editorial structure that satisfied both sides, but we got there.

Dan Didio On The DC/Milestone Deal

DC Nation: #127
August 20, 2008

Last week we spoke about how DC Comics licensed the rights to the Archie superhero characters and left them in the very capable hands of Joe Straczynski for our ongoing BRAVE AND BOLD series. I also mentioned last week that we'd something more to talk about. Well, here it is…
I was always a fan of Milestone Comics. When they burst on the scene in 1993, they were brash, powerful and stood apart from the rest of the superhero books on the shelves. This was not because of the ethnic makeup of the line, it was because their characters and stories had a strength and rawness most books were searching for. Even now, more than ten years since they were last seen in comics form, Static, Icon, Blood Syndicate and Hardware still stand strong with comics fans.
So when I came to DC, and I looked over all the characters the universe had to offer, I still felt there was room for more. As I mentioned, as a longtime Milestone fan, I thought that those characters would be a great addition to our line, not just to see print in their own series and own universe, but to add to, diversify, expand, and enhance the existing DC Universe. Over the years I had spoken to Dwayne McDuffie, one of the co-founders of Milestone, and on several occasions our conversations drifted over to Milestone. We both agreed that it would be great to see these characters back in print but always had trouble figuring out how to make it work -- that is, until now.
Now, I am extremely happy to announce that a deal was made and the Milestone characters live once more. And more important, they will operate as part of the DC Universe. Starting later this year, Icon and Shadow Cabinet will be appearing in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (of course it helps that Dwayne is writing the series) and even more exciting, Static will be making his way to the TEEN TITANS! Back in all their glory and just the way you remember them. After all, it would be difficult to improve on concepts as strong as these.
You will see more announcements regarding Milestone as the year progresses, but I hope you will be joining me in welcoming back these great characters to the comic book fold.
To be continued…

Overnight Sensation

In the newest issue of Wizard Magazine, I've been voted the 2008 "Favorite Breakout Talent" in the Wizard Fan Awards. Quite an accomplishment for someone celebrating his 20th year as a comic book writer.

Thanks to everyone who voted.

Sunday, July 20, 2008

I'm at Comic-Con International, July 23-27

I'm mostly there just to buy comics (I'm looking at you, Howard The Duck Omnibus) and gawk at celebrities, but I am making a few scheduled appearances and I hope to get a chance to meet a lot of you in the flesh, for a change. Also, with a little luck, sometime this weekend we'll be making a MAJOR announcement about my comics work (the lawyers are frantically lawyering away to get the contracts ready to sign in time for San Diego). If that happens, we'll have a LOT to talk about.

2-3 PM in BOOTH #828
I'll be signing comics, DVDs, videogames and used napkins at the always friendly, always cool Antidote Trust booth. The Antidote Trust is a collective of independent comic creators, all of whom do good work, so while you're there chatting with me, make sure you also check out some of the stuff on sale there. As usual, I'll sign whatever you bring. We're also planning to have a few copies of my comics available for purchase at the booth, just in case you forget to bring your own and can't find anything suitable at the show.

10:15-11:15 AM in ROOM 6A
Join ├╝ber-cartoon-creator-genius Glen Murakami and his crew as they discuss their hit new Cartoon Network show Ben 10: Alien Force. It’s your chance to get the inside story on all the new alien heroes—and, of course, all the bad guys! Accompanying Glen are story editor Dwayne McDuffie and voice talents Yuri Lowenthal (Ben), Ashley Johnson (Gwen), Greg Cipes (Kevin), and Dee Bradley Baker (Aliens). And that’s just half the excitement! Jay Stephens will also be on hand to talk about his mysterious and cool new show The Secret Saturdays.

3-4 PM in BOOTH #828
I'm back for a second round of signing, in a desperate attempt to unload all the comics I thought I'd sell on Friday. Hope to see you there.

Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, I WON'T be on THE BLACK PANEL '08, featuring Method Man (The Wu Tang Clan), Reggie Hudlin (president, B.E.T.), Denys Cowan (B.E.T. Animation, “The Origin of the Joker”), Rusty Cundieff (director, Chappelle’s Show, Fear of a Black Hat) John Dokes (Marvel Comics), and Faith Cheltenham ( Hosted by Michael Davis, so you won't even miss me.

I Answer FINAL CRISIS Questions at CBR

“Final Crisis,” DC Comics’ major status-quo shattering event of 2008, will actually “crossover” into only a handful of titles but one noticeably absent from its auspicious preview, “DC Universe: Zero,” was the publisher’s top-selling book, “Justice League of America.” And while the story in “Justice League of America” #21, on sale May 28, is directly tied to “Final Crisis,” superstar writer Dwayne McDuffie told CBR News after that, the two titles part ways...

I'm at I-Con 27 This Weekend

I'm going to be a guest at I-Con 27, from April 4-6 on the campus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Attended by over 6,000 people each year, I-CON is a three day festival, designed to encourage literacy, creativity and interest in science and technology through science fiction and its related genres. Programming at I-CON spans a wide range of topics and interests, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, Japanese animation (otherwise known as Anime), science and technology, comic books, and medieval reenactment.

Guest speakers are invited from around the world to share their experiences in their fields, information about any new or upcoming projects and their insights into the genre with their fans. Over the course of the convention, guests typically will participate in panel discussions, give workshops and demonstrations, sign autographs, and interact with their fans on a one on one basis in such venues as the Awards Banquet. With so much to offer, I-CON is able to appeal to a diverse audience, including college students, senior citizens and families with young children.

I'll likely be doing a panel or two, more on that as the programming firms up. I'm really looking forward to this, as the guest list includes two personal heroes of mine, Ray Bradbury and Harlan Ellison. Other guests announnced so far are Peter David, Billy West, Rutger Hauer, Tracy Scroggins, Tim Russ and Justice League Unlimited's Jeffrey ("The Question") Combs.

BEN 10: Alien Force

Courtesy TV Guide:

Cartoon Network's Ben 10 Grows Up... Fast

Kids, they really do grow up so fast. After just 49 episodes (and two TV-movies), 10-year-old Ben Tennyson is getting flash-forwarded to age 15 this spring in Cartoon Network's Ben 10: Alien Force. When the new series picks up, it's been a few years since Ben has worn the Omnitrix, a mysterious extraterrestrial watch that enables him to transform into 10 different aliens. When he puts it back on, he discovers his DNA has changed and he can now transform into 10 new aliens. (Just think of the expanded merchandising opportunities!) The show is being overseen by veteran animation producers Glen Murakami (Teen Titans) and Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League Unlimited).

Ben 10 is the network’s No. 1 Saturday-morning show, so it begs the question: Why the change? "This is the first superhero character we have to play with at Cartoon Network where we can age him up and watch him grow," says Michael Ouweleen, senior VP for development and creative direction. "It just opens up so many possibilities. Rather than just introduce villain-of-the-week after villain-of-the-week, [we thought] it would be more interesting to see how his experiences growing up have shaped him." — Rich Sands
